1. Understand what your potential customer is looking for
Careful planning is the key to success. By taking the time to understand what your potential customer is looking for, and what their requirements for the bid are, the chances are your bid will be a lot more successful. Learn how to evaluate the ITT (invitation to tender), and meet the requirements of the bid.
2. Avoid common hazards that reduce the effectiveness of your bid
If your bid is interesting and engaging it will encourage your reader to take on board your key messages. There are a number of common hazards that can stand in the way of your message. Learn the most common mistakes people make when writing bids and how to avoid them.
3. Discover the secrets to persuasive writing
What is it about some writing that makes you want to believe what is written and act on it? Learn the secrets to persuasive writing that get your reader to take action.
Writing for bids is a skill. You have to sell your ideas but you cannot use overly “salesy” language. A writing style that is too commercial, or reads too much like promotional literature, may turn your reader off your content. You will learn how your content and structure contribute to a persuasive piece of text. Also learn about our Persuasion Map – a flowchart which describes the process of constructing a persuasive argument.
4. Learn the tools to structure your bid
What is the best way to structure your bid and your executive summary? We discuss the options that are available to you. Bids often fall into two types: prescriptive – where you answer all the questions asked in the order they are provided to you, or free format where you can decide the order in which you present your information. In both cases you need to think about using tools to help you organise your material and make sure your reader picks up on all your key messages. We investigate the use of Storyboards, Mind Mapping, Word Outline View and Compliance Matrix.
5. Some writing tips to help make your writing easier to read
We will discuss how headings, chunking text and avoiding management speak can all help to make your writing more readable. Also we will look at how we can prune over wordy answers to comply with word counts.
