Advanced Writing Workshops
You spend a lot of time communicating information to colleagues and clients. In a single day you can write everything from simple emails to full-blown proposals, reports or business cases. Even though your grammar and punctuation are good, these writing tasks may be taking you longer than they should. Or despite your best efforts you’re just not achieving the results you hoped for.
Plain Words Advanced Writing Workshops give you the chance to learn techniques that will not only improve the way you write but also make the writing task easier. You’ll meet a small group of like-minded people who want to refresh and improve their writing skills. You’ll tackle some in-depth exercises and work on your own documents in a supportive environment with input from the workshop facilitator, who is an experienced business writer.
Workshop organisation
Our workshops are run on an informal basis. Start the day with coffee and a round-table discussion of what you feel your writing strengths are and what challenges you still face.
The workshop facilitator will then take you through a brief, light-hearted refresher of the basics of good writing, and offer some focussed exercises based on particular learning points. You choose the ones you’d like to tackle. Later, you can discuss them with the presenter and other delegates who shared the same interests.
Now you should be feeling energised and ready to look with fresh eyes at the writing you have brought with you. The facilitator will spend time with you individually, coaching you in the areas you’ve identified as needing reinforcement, helping you to identify problems and develop techniques to remedy them.
Who should attend
Our workshops are available to anyone who has attended one of our writing courses or who already understands the principles of good writing.
We have several workshops catering for different kinds of business writing. We can advise you on which one will suit you best.
Pre-Workshop Questionnaire
When you book, we’ll send you a questionnaire, which we’d like you to return to us before attending the workshop. This enables our Trainers to assess your needs in advance.
The right one for you
We have four one-day workshops to choose from:
Business Writing Workshop
This day covers general business writing skills. If most of your work involves emails or letters, along with some reports and simple business cases, this workshop lets you get valuable suggestions to improve your writing in these areas and to make sure you’re following best practice for each of these forms. It’s also a chance to sort out all those little niggles you might have about what constitutes correct grammar and punctuation.
Technical Writing Workshop
This workshop is for writers of technical documents – such as technical specifications, user guides, product information or technical content for websites. Bring examples of your work and find out the latest techniques.
Copywriting Workshop
Does your work involve writing promotional material, in-house magazines or advertising copy? It’s important to keep your writing fresh and current when your words present your company’s public face. And as most companies maintain websites, your writing needs to be as readable online as it is on paper. This workshop gives you the opportunity to ensure that your writing is still as compelling as possible.
Persuasive Writing Workshop
Bids, proposals and complex business cases are some of the most highly-pressured areas of business writing. Working to tight deadlines means you rarely have the luxury of analysing your writing or seeing how others might tackle the kind of issues you face. Our workshop presenters are writers experienced in this field who have trained many others in this demanding discipline.
Materials
You’ll receive a booklet containing the refresher information and copies of all the exercises.
What to bring
A relaxed attitude! And whatever writing you’d like to work on and discuss with the facilitator, either as printouts or on a laptop. Make sure you take advantage of this rare opportunity to work one-to-one with a writing expert on your specific interests and requirements.
